Environmental IT and Geomatics
Environmental IT and geomatics are already being used support
environmental research in forestry, ecology, business management
and community planning. As such, this technology cross cuts the
proposed CEE pillars. This technology could be used to monitor
water flows, energy usage, water and waste water treatment and
any other aspect of community management necessary to promote
sustainable communities. This data could be fed into a modeling
unit to give communities real time modeling of their
environmental performance. This technology could also be used to
develop a detailed three-dimensional virtual image and model of
natural areas, with a focus on incorporating biophysical data,
as well as economic (tourism/forestry) data. This integrated
model would be a showcase national (and perhaps international)
project that would support additional research in the forestry
and tourism pillars. The College of the North Atlantic in Corner
Brook houses the Geospatial Research Facility (GRF), an
outstanding geospatial research unit. Working with this facility
will allow the CEE to move forward in the geomatics sector in a
number of new directions.
